Soft and chewy red velvet sugar cookies made with red velvet cake mix, sour cream, and topped with a creamy cream cheese frosting. Perfect for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, or any celebration.

  • 1 box Red Velvet Cake Mix (16.5 oz or 468 g)
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 100 g cream cheese (about 3.5 oz)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, flour, oil, sour cream (or Greek yogurt), and eggs.
  3. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until the dough is smooth and uniform.
  4. Using a cookie scoop, portion about one tablespoon of dough per cookie and roll into balls.
  5. Place on baking sheet and flatten gently with the bottom of a glass.
  6. Bake for 8–9 minutes until tops lose their shine and edges are set.
  7. Cool on tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a separate bowl, beat butter and cream cheese together until fluffy.
  9. Add powdered sugar gradually and beat until smooth and spreadable.
  10. Frost cooled cookies and decorate as desired.
