Monte Cristo Sandwich Casserole is an indulgent baked version of the classic sandwich, perfect for breakfast, brunch, or holidays. Layers of savory ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese are nestled between slices of bread, soaked in a rich custard, and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of white sandwich bread
  • 8 slices of deli ham
  • 8 slices of deli turkey
  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for garnish)
  • ⅓ cup raspberry preserves or jam (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) if baking immediately.
  2. Place 4 slices of bread in the dish. Top each with a slice of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, then another slice of bread to form sandwiches.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, nutmeg, salt, and melted butter until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard evenly over the sandwiches. Press gently so the bread absorbs the mixture.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
  6. Remove plastic, cover with foil, and bake 30 minutes. Uncover and bake another 15 minutes until golden and set.
  7. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with raspberry preserves on the side.
