Ingredients
Scale
2 cups water
2½ cups sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 slice lemon
3½ cups flour
1 teaspoon instant dry yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1 pinch salt
2 cups lukewarm water
2 cups vegetable or sunflower oil
¼ cup oil (to dip teaspoon)
Instructions
Prepare the Syrup: In a saucepan, combine 2½ cups sugar, 2 cups water, lemon juice, and lemon slice. Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Let it cool.
Make the Dough: In another bowl, mix 3½ cups flour, instant dry yeast, 1 tablespoon sugar, and a pinch of salt. Gradually add lukewarm water and knead until smooth. Cover and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Dough: Once risen, use a dipped teaspoon to shape small balls the size of a walnut.
Heat the Oil: In a deep pan, heat vegetable oil over medium-high. Fry the dough balls, turning until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Soak in Syrup: While warm, dip fried dough balls into cooled syrup. Let them absorb syrup for at least 5 minutes before serving.
