Festive cherry bars with a buttery shortbread base, topped with a sweet almond glaze, perfect for holiday gatherings.

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 can (21 oz) cherry pie filling
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch pan.
  2. Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until a shortbread dough forms.
  4. Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  5. Spread the cherry pie filling over the dough and drizzle almond extract on top.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes until edges are lightly golden brown.
  7. Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan.
  8. Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and additional almond extract until smooth to make the glaze.
  9. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled bars, then cut into squares and serve.
