Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup finely diced apples
  • For the Crumb Topping:
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a donut pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the applesauce, milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Gently fold in the diced apples.
  6. Prepare the crumb topping: In a small bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Spoon the donut batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about two-thirds full.
  8. Sprinkle a generous amount of the crumb topping over each donut.
  9. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a donut comes out clean.
  10. Let the donuts cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh apples.
  • You can add chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumb topping for extra crunch.
  • Ensure your butter for the crumb topping is cold for the best texture.
  • These donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
