All American Buttercream Frosting

A versatile and stable frosting that gives a smooth, matte finish, perfect for cookie decorating and piping flowers.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup room temperature unsalted butter
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 lbs. plus 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp. clear vanilla extract
  • 24 tbsp. room temperature whole milk

Instructions

  1. Fit your mixer with the paddle attachment. Add the butter and shortening to the bowl. Beat on medium speed until smooth, about 1–2 minutes.
  2. Reduce mixer speed. Slowly add powdered sugar in manageable batches. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl between additions.
  3. Once all powdered sugar is incorporated, add the clear vanilla extract and mix briefly to combine.
  4. Add 2 tablespoons of milk and beat until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk or powdered sugar as needed.
